Police Department Makes Switch from Pickup Truck to Reading Service Body

Company Name: Portland Police Department
Reading Products: Custom service body
Type of Service: Mounted Police Patrol

The Portland Police Department, Portland, OR, recently made the switch from a pickup truck to a customized Reading service body. Mounted on a Freightliner double-cab chassis, the Reading service body was customized to accommodate a trailer hook-up for a four or six horse trailer. The unit was purchased through Pacific Utility Equipment, an authorized Reading distributor located in Portland OR.
The Portland Police chose a heavy duty chassis because of the need to pull a great amount of weight. The Reading service body features weathertight exterior storage compartments, which are used to store the officers equipment including saddles, bridle reins and foul weather gear.
According to Sergeant Dave Pool, they chose the Reading service body because of it’s ability to provide a secure, dry environment for the valuable equipment. Previously, the department used pickup trucks which meant the officers were riding in the truck with all of their equipment. This arrangement created an extremely crowded situation for the officers.
The Portland Police Department maintains a mounted patrol unit to help police the metropolitan area of Portland measuring approximately 147 square miles. The mounted patrol also travels to surrounding areas when requested to help provide additional protection especially for large crowd control.
Standard Reading features include the use of two sided zinc coated A60 galvannealed steel combined with Reading’s exclusive Lectro-Life® immersion priming process for unbeatable rust and corrosion protection. Slam-action rivet-on compartment locks are built to slam shut and stay shut; and flange-mounted automotive rubber door seals ensure weathertight protection to valuable tools and equipment stored in the compartments.

Reading Service Body Gives Life to Police Department

Company Name: Town of Mount Pleasant Police Department
Reading Products: Classic® Series Service Body
Type of Service: Accident Extrication

As an accident victim, it may seem like countless minutes pass before rescue help reaches you. As an emergency response crew member, you know that every second it takes to find the proper extrication equipment may be vital in saving a victim’s life. Having a large variety of equipment well organized in your vehicle can mean the difference between life and death.
In order to insure they are properly prepared for emergency extrication rescue, the Town of Mount Pleasant Police Department purchased a Reading Classic® Series low-profile service body equipped with a sliding top. The Reading body is mounted on a Chevrolet chassis and was purchased through T.W. Truck Equippers, an authorized Reading distributor located in Rochester, NY.
The Town of Mount Pleasant has a population of 40,000 and covers 27 square miles. The department chose the Reading low profile service body because of the amount of organized storage space available, and because it offers better rear visibility to the driver.
Comprised of weathertight exterior storage compartments and cargo area, the Town of Mount Pleasant Police Department uses the service body to transport the jaws of life, tow chains, hydraulic cutting shears, an emergency generator, first aid equipment and other necessary items for vehicle extrication. They opted to enclose the cargo area with a sliding top, giving them weathertight storage for the generator. A sliding tray was added to the front passenger side compartment for quick, easy access to the cutting shears and jaws of life.
When not being used for emergency purposes, the Town of Mount Pleasant uses their Reading service body for routine motor patrol responding to radio calls.
Each Classic® Series service body is completely constructed of two-sided zinc-coated A-60 galvannealed steel, which provides the first layer of rust protection. After the bodies are assembled, they received Reading’s Lectro-Life® immersion priming process providing the most complete rust and corrosion protection in the industry. Other standard features include double panel compartment doors for increased strength; bolt-on stainless steel pin hinges which securely hold doors in place and ensure smoother operation in all weather conditions; flange-mounted automotive rubber door seals providing weathertight protection of tools and equipment; automotive-quality rotary locks which offer greater security to valuable tools and equipment; and a rugged understructure that is reinforced at all critical stress points providing optimum durability.
